Horrible Bosses

Have you ever had a boss who made coming to work feel like a nightmare? You're not alone.

Unfortunately, terrible bosses are all too common in the workplace. From micromanagement to verbal abuse, these types of bosses can make the work environment unbearable.

But, it's important to remember that you deserve to be treated with respect and dignity at work.

If you find yourself in a situation with a horrible boss, there are a few things you can do:

🔥 Document the behavior:

Keep a record of any incidents of bad behavior, including the date, time, and specific actions. This can be helpful if you decide to take any formal steps to address the issue.

🔥 Talk to HR: (or maybe not 😬)

If the behavior is impacting your mental or physical well-being, it's important to bring it to the attention of HR. They can provide support and guidance on how to handle the situation.

🔥 Set boundaries:

It's important to establish clear boundaries and communicate them to your boss. Let them know what you are and are not willing to tolerate.

🔥 Seek support:

Don't go through this alone. Reach out to friends and family for support, and consider finding a therapist or counselor to help you cope with the stress.

Remember, no one deserves to be treated poorly at work. If you're dealing with a horrible boss, know that you have options and support available to you.

Career Therapy can help!

Life After Layoff

LIFE AFTER LAYOFF! It's never easy to deal with a layoff, but it's important to remember that it's not the end of the world. In fact, it can be an opportunity to start a new chapter in your career.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you navigate life after a layoff:

✅ Take some time to process your emotions.

It's natural to feel a range of feelings after a layoff, including shock, anger, and sadness. Allow yourself to feel these emotions, but try not to get stuck in them.

✅ Reflect on what you've learned during your time at the company.

Think about the skills you've gained, the projects you've worked on, and the relationships you've built. These are all valuable assets that you can use in your next role.

✅ Update your resume and LinkedIn profile.

Highlight the relevant skills and experiences you've gained during your time at the company. Don't be afraid to reach out to former colleagues and managers for references and endorsements.

✅ Network!

Reach out to friends and acquaintances in your industry, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Attend industry events and join professional groups on LinkedIn.

✅ Keep an open mind.

A layoff can be an opportunity to explore new industries or career paths. It's important to be flexible and willing to consider different options.

Remember, a layoff is not a reflection of your worth or capabilities as a professional. It's just a change in the path.

If you keep a positive attitude, stay focused and stay motivated, you will find your next role.

Take Care. Stay Strong! And if you need help with your next transition, let's chat.

Also, huge shout out to Martin McGovern, the host of Career Therapy, for creating, producing, and starring in ONE HUNDRED podcast episodes. This is no small feat, for anyone. So trust us, a round of applause is in order.

Most podcasts burn out after a couple dozen episodes (or get left in the dust well before that) as the hosts pursue other interests or simply realize how challenging it is to churn out inspired content on a regular basis. Not Career Therapy. For over two-and-½ years now (since January 2020), Martin has been fueling the creative fire in order to crank out new episodes. As always, he’s exploring the hidden side of modern work, helping you turn procrastination into job search motivation, and teaching you how to stress less, earn more, and change careers with confidence.

Although we’ve relaxed the upload schedule a bit as Martin’s about to begin his own journey to become a therapist (ie. concentrate the ‘Therapy’ half of the podcast name), the show must go on. We’ll see you soon with new episodes. But for now, cheers to 100. It wouldn’t have been possible without Martin’s perseverance and dedication.

By the way, if you dig this podcast, consider hitting the subscribe button on YouTube, clicking ‘follow’ on social media or wherever you get your audio content, or passing it along to a friend whom you think might be interested. We’re aiming to send these ideas far and wide. Thanks for all your support, and thanks for tuning in.

#96 - "HOW DO I FIND A BETTER WORK LIFE BALANCE?" | Live Coaching Call with 'Kara'

Career Therapy Podcast e.96 - LIVE CAREER COACHING SESSION (with ‘Kara’)

We’re continuing our foray into the live coaching calls this week with an episode (e.96) featuring a woman named ‘Kara.’ By the way, this is a throwback episode from an older series (way back in 2018) that was going to be called ‘Career Instincts,’ and revolve solely around live coaching sessions with different clients.

Kara is in project management, coming from an environmental science background. She’s a little intimidated by the idea of learning programming languages and coding skills, but loves the coordination, management, problem-solving, and communications aspect of her current job. Nonetheless, she’s worried she’ll be “stuck" in the same unfulfilling role forever. She's looking to break out and broaden her horizons.

In this episode, Martin takes ‘Kara’ through a full-on coaching call, helping her identify the parts of her life/career she wants to improve, the specific role she wants to pursue, and the companies she’s interested in working for. The call deals a lot with finding a good work/life balance, transferring skills from more physical hands-on roles to white-collar desk jobs, and creating a financial runway to reorient one’s career. If you’ve ever wondered what a live coaching call is like, this is the episode for you!
